From a three hundred year old recipe, Dorset Blue Vinny is a stunning cheese made with skimmed milk, with a good balance between the blue and the rest of the paste. It’s rich with lovely umami notes.
At one time Blue Vinny was made by the farmer's wife in every dairy farm in Dorset. Fine Dorset butter was all the rage in London and after skimming the fat to make the butter, the leftover milk would be used to make Blue Vinny. With milk rations after the second world war, only a few kinds of cheese were legal to make. Vinny seemed destined to be relegated to the history books until Michael Davies revived a hundred year old recipe back in 1980.
Now the only Dorset Blue Vinny in production, the cheese has been awarded a protected designation of origin. Less creamy than Stilton, Dorset Blue Vinny has a slightly crumbly texture which increases with age. A strong blue that still manages to perfectly balance the veining with the paste of the cheese and leaves you with a long earthy finish.

In the heart of the Dorset countryside, just outside Sturminster Newton, you’ll find Woodbridge Farm which has been home to the Davies family for over 40 years. Woodbridge Farm is home to 270 Holstein Friesian cows, on the 580 acre Stock Estate at Stock Gaylard. Richard farms on the heavy Oxford clay soil which can be challenging, growing 140 acres of corn and 100 acres of maize each year. They calve all year round to produce a continued milk supply which goes into making Dorset Blue Vinny Cheese.
